In a joint venture with Estrusa, the major aluminum extruder in Equador, Conservatek provided design, engineering, fabrication and installation support to create one of the largest clear span structures in Conservatek’s history. The structure is of an ovoid cone design which is divided into 32 space truss sections.

The system used for this project is a modified Star*Dome system called “STAR*CONE” which was designed to meet the variability in geometry and to be simplistic in design and fabrication. The structure has one central compression ring of aluminum Star*Dome plate construction and a network of mainly 4″ x 4″ strut members and 2″ diameter round tubular brace members. The radial struts are 2 “C” section components, bolted together to create a single individual member.

The “C” concept of the major members allows the assembly of the stadium in 32 separate sections that can be inter-loaded together to create a complete 3-D space network. The Coliseo Ruminahui is the sports center near downtown Quito, the Capital of Ecuador. The structure is 442’/135 meters by 367’/112 meters and covers approximately 130,000 square feet/12,000 meters.
